Modem Initializations Strings
(The numbers in the strings represent suggested connect
speeds ie. +ms=,,,40000 will make the modem connect at maximum of 40k,
telephone line permitting)
Setting a Modem Init String in Windows
98/ME.
Click on Start
Click on Settings
Click on Control Panel
Click on Modems
One left click on the modem you wish to set the Init String (usually one)
With the modem highlighted, Click on Properties below
Click on the Connection tab
Click on Advanced
In the Extra Settings Box, type the required init string
Click ok and then OK again then close.
The init string will be used the next time you dial in.

XP.
Click on Start

Windows Vista
Click Start.
Open the Control Panel.
Open the Phone and Modem Options control panel. If its not visible click
the Change to Classic View option on the left hand side.
Select the Modems tab.
You will see your installed modems listed along with the COM ports they
are attached to. Select you modem from the list and click the Properties
button. There can be a slight delay while Windows retrieves the
necessary information.
Click on the Change settings button this will pop open a new modem
properties window.
Select the Modem tab.
Select the Advanced tab.
You can enter modem commands into the Extra initialisation commands text
box, this setting is only available after clicking Change settings under
General.
Click the Change Default Preferences button.
Click the OK button again to close the Modem Specific Properties window.
Click the OK button to close the Phone and Modem Options window.
(Note: Please be aware that speeds inside the
curved brackets are not part of the init string. You can change speeds as
you wish, but be careful as only certain speeds can be accepted in some
cases i.e. flex modems don't accept 41333)
