Omninet was formed in
April 1998 with
the aim to provide a quick and reliable Internet service
to it's customers, using the best digital technology
available. After some months obtaining the relevant
paperwork and equipment, we were ready to start up in July.
We quickly reached our
modem ratio limit (8:1) by August.
A pre-planned expansion, was brought forward, which
included the installation of a digital dial-in server and
a high capacity fibre optic connection. This ensured that
we would adequately service the needs of our customers
and allow for future growth. The equipment is now in
place and proving to provide connections greater than 33.6k
connections when using a 56k modem.
By July 1999, we had
installed a High Capacity Satellite link to the Internet and it's
shown excellent results in download speeds, web surfing
and other means of data transfer.
In late 1999, we were appointed a
Securepay dealer. We were now able to setup secure
online-merchant payment facilities using credit cards etc,
for businesses who wanted to provide a faster and easier means of
payment for their customers.
The year 2000 was
one of our busiest years yet, for new projects, including the new and exciting
initiative, the Albany GateWay Project and the innovative radio
network we call Skynet.
In February 2001, a 1 Mbit
Full Pipe connection was installed linking us directly to the WAIX
connection in Paradox Perth WA. Connections nationally are now excellent,
and latency to the US and other overseas locations has been improved
using this superior terrestrial connection.
By November 2001, the main terrestrial
link had increased to 1.5Mbit. This allowed for further expansion into
the broadband market as well as improving web access for all our
customers. The 2Mbit Satellite link was retained as a redundant
feed and is still used on occasions for supplementing bandwidth.
In mid 2002, ADSL
became the latest broadband service to be provided by Omninet. With
competitive pricing and unique service provision, ADSL marked us
for a prominent position in the local market for broadband services.
In March 2004, we upgraded
our main Internet feed from 1.5bit to 2 Mbit . At the same time we
had obtained membership to APNIC, which allowed us our own IP address
ranges and AS number. Omninet continues to grow and looks forward to a
very bright future.
August 2004, was when we
went national. Now Omninet became available to all of Australia. A proud
accomplishment considering our humble beginnings. Although Omninet
wasn't as big as our larger competitors, it meant we could
compete and provide Internet services all around Australia and
from what our customers have said, provide a better support service than
our larger competitors.
Omninet is locally owned
in Albany, Western Australia and is available all around Australia.
