The Caravan Moves On

The Collins English Dictionary defines criticism as: "the act or an instance of making an unfavourable or severe judgement, comment, etc…" Well, busy people experience a lot of criticism. And if you are a person who is on the receiving end of some "unfavourable judgment," perhaps the story I'd like to share with you today might be of some help.

The caravan moved across the desert and through the villages. The wagons were painted bright colours; red, yellow, and blue. The harnesses on the horses were studded with silver. The caravan was rich and beautiful.

A wise experienced man drove the lead wagon. Seated proudly beside him was his eight-year old son. As they passed through the dusty little villages the scroungy, flea-bitten dogs would come out and bark at the caravan. The little boy once asked his father, why he didn't do something about the barking dogs. The father had answered, "The dogs bark son, while the caravan moves on." He continued, "Remember, never stop a caravan to address a barking dog."

Friend, that's excellent advice for each of us to remember. Don't stop what we are doing to answer critical people!

Concerning criticism, Frederick The great said, "I go through my appointed daily stage, and I care not for the curs who bark at me along the road." On the other hand, some people clothe their commentary in the old standby "constructive criticism," when there is nothing at all constructive about their fault-finding. However, invited analysis and commentary is invaluable. And people who need criticism know whom to ask. They ask people who are already experienced and proficient at what they are trying to do.

Criticism is really unavoidable for those who are busy doing whatever they do. In fact, the only people who aren't criticized are those who don't do anything, don't say anything, and don't accomplish very much. As Kenneth Tynan said, "A critic is the man who knows the way but can't drive the car."

Friend, if you would like a small booklet that could help you, or someone you know, control criticism, we'd be pleased to send one to you. The booklet is simply titled "TONGUE CONTROL".
