The Best Dressed Woman in Town
Would you like to be the best dressed woman in town? Impossible you say? Your budget won’t stand it? Your husband would throw a fit? Wait a moment…don’t despair…perhaps there is a way. James Montgomery says:

Fairest and best adorned is she
Whose clothing is humility.

Humility! That’s the key. “That low, sweet root, from which all heavenly virtues shoot,” can make you the best dressed woman in town.

But, do not mistake humility with an inferiority complex. There’s a world of difference between the two. There is no justification for constantly feeling inferior to others; because, to have a “modest” sense of one’s ability and importance does not include that underestimation which leads to inactivity.

Nor is true humility merely acting humble. Linus, of comic-strip fame, made this mistake, in thinking: “When I get big, I’m going to be a humble little country doctor. I’ll live in the city, and every morning I’ll get up, climb into my sports car and zoom into the country! Then I’ll start healing people…I’ll heal everybody for miles around! I’ll be a world famous humble little country doctor.

Let me ask a question…what was wrong with the thinking of Linus? Well, in true humility there is a forgetting of self, and unfortunately, in what Linus was saying, everything was being centred on himself.

On the other hand, if we could develop a nature of being unconcerned about our, so-called human rights, we will have more room for the interests of those around us. Observe humility in action in the life of Jesus. Unconcerned about His divine majesty, He washes the feet of His disciples. Conversely, small people, seeking high places, dare not let themselves be seen doing small things. But among humble people, there is a willingness to serve.

Women naturally give attention to such matters as hair-style, jewellery, and dress. But the most beautiful adorning is that of the heart. The apostle Peter speaks of “the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.” (1 Peter 3:4) Later, in the same book, he says, “Be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.” This modest, unpretentious spirit has been called by Tennyson “the highest virtue, mother of them all.” Unfortunately, humility has been more praised than practiced.

So dear friend, if you would be beautiful, remember that the best dressed woman is clothed with humility. If you would like a copy of a small booklet that would help you to know how you can fit into God’s plan, please write for “Fitting Into God’s Plan” and we will send it to you by return mail.
