LIFE’S ADDED DIMENSION
In Genesis 47:8 we read the following question: “How many are the days of the years of your life?” Well, before people are twenty and after they are 80 they seem to enjoy telling their age. But between those years they prefer not to talk about it. My friend, too many of us haven’t learned that there is more to life than years, that life has various dimensions. It has length to be sure. And length is important because there must be some length in order to achieve anything. The baby that is born today and dies tomorrow does not accomplish anything-it has no time to show its capacity. Many men have done their best work after they have passed 60. Tennyson was 83 when he wrote “Crossing the Bar.” Goethe wrote “Faust” when past 80. Gladstone became Prime Minister three times after he was 60. But a long life is not necessarily a productive one. Some burn the candle at both ends, others never even light it. Life also has breadth. We live in the age of specialization. That has its good points, but there’s also something terribly sad about it. Many men and women are brilliant in their own narrow specialization-but ignorant of everything else. In their own area they’re as sharp and bright as a needle-and just as narrow. There is also the dimension of height. You can’t determine how tall a person is by standing them against the door and measuring their “Accomplishments-to-Date.” You have to take into consideration what they can become-their ambition, their resolve. My friend, God doesn’t look at us as a finished product, but with a view to what we can become. Indeed, this is the added dimension of life God gives to each of us. So let me ask you a very personal question! Are you living up to your spiritual potential? If not, you may be failing because you haven’t adopted a clear-cut plan for spiritual growth-one which you will persevere with, one which will take precedence over everything else.
