HOW SWEET IT IS
Sticks and stones may break my bones,
But words can never hurt me.

That’s not so! Nothing hurts worse than words-either thoughtlessly spoken or intended to hurt. And nothing is sweeter than friendly words, designed to encourage.

Many a person on the edge of collapse has received second wind from the encouraging words of a friend. Talking it over with a friend is exhilarating. “Appreciation is the oil that keeps the machinery of human relations running smoothly.” But it must be expressed. You see, it is essential to say nice things for them to do any good…not just think them. Solomon wrote, “How good is a timely word.” (Proverbs 15:23)

Where is the person who has not hugged some compliment to his heart and brought it out in the cold, dark hours to warm his soul and light his way? We’ll cross a busy street to speak to someone who has said something nice about us-but we’ll walk around the block to avoid someone who has criticized us.

I’m sure, that if you are anything like me, you have hidden somewhere, in a safe place, a cherished letter. It’s a letter of appreciation which came from a son or daughter, a husband or wife, or a friend. It may be yellow with age and smudged with much handling. You can quote it word-for-word, but you still pull it out not and then to read it again.

Perhaps you should write a letter like that. Because, as Solomon wrote; “Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.” (Proverbs 16:24)

Friend, I hope this message helps you to find and enjoy a better life. If you have something you would like to share with me, you may write to me
