TAKE TIME TO LISTEN TO OTHERS
How do you feel about yourself today? Do you sometimes wonder if there is anyone who really understands you? I think we sometimes walk through the world trying to avoid all those people and situations that might give us pain. I can understand that attitude. But carry it too far, and it will lead us to an incredibly difficult life. Sometimes we avoid confrontations with strangers at first, then with friends and family until finally we’re left feeling that everyone’s out to get us and that no one really understands us. What can be done about this? Consider the following: Once there was a man with a wooden tongue who tried to sing… and the sound was awful, but there was one person who heard the clip, clapper of the wooden tongue and understood what the singer was trying to express…and the singer was content with that. Being understood is a transforming experience, but it requires that some one listens to us. But too often that other person wants to be listened to and the end result is frustration. I once saw a poster that showed two tiny human figures separated by a long flight of stairs. The caption read, “Meet someone halfway. Communication is the beginning of understanding.” Next time you’re feeling misunderstood, listen to what others around you are saying and that will encourage them to listen to your needs-try it, it works.
