Elders and Deacons are men who have been elected by the congregation to help the minister lead and guide the congregation. The institution of the elder can be found in the Old Testament, Exodus 3:16 where the Lord told Moses to gather the elders of Israel together in Egypt. The Lord instructed Moses to select seventy men to help bear the burden of the people and to command the people. The task of the elder together with the minister, is to have supervision over Christ's church, to take care that in the congregation all things are done decently and in good order, to assist the minister of the word with good counsel and advice, to work as shepherds and overseer's of God's flock. The Ministry of Mercy is assigned to the Deacons. God impressed upon his people to show mercy, hospitality and generosity to his people, so that the weak and needy may share abundantly in the joy of God's people. For the sake of this service of love, Christ has given deacons to His church, Acts 6:1-7. |
