Dear Janice
Her letter began: "I'm writing because in a recent article, you extended the invitation to write and said you'd answer. I have wanted to write for quite a while, but I was afraid to. I thought: No, he is a busy person and probably has a million important things to do, and I shouldn't bother him. I even phoned a couple of times but lost my nerve and hung up. Why did I want to talk to you so badly? Because I am hoping that finally someone will understand why I am so lost, so fearful and so unhappy." Friends, the letter from Janice continues: (Janice is not her real name.) "You write about imperfect lives, yet people who were able to find their way back to God. What you wrote started just the smallest glimmer of hope in me. Maybe I have a chance at happiness and meaning, at being a whole person again, not the numbed-out empty shell I've become. I've longed for a close relationship with God, but I didn't see how I could ever hope to bridge the distance I had created between us." Usually, when I receive a letter like Janice wrote I feel very sad. Not this however. Because Janice wants something more. She hungers after God. She longs to know and feel His loving kindness in her life. She even dares to believe God repairs broken people. Friends, Janice demonstrated great courage in writing to me. As a result, we are corresponding. You see, I really believe in God's restoring love. Just like Peter, the apostle, James and John, and Zaccheus I've experienced it in my own life. And who can read the powerful story in Luke 7:36-44 of the woman in Simon's house and doubt God's love for those who have much to be forgiven?
