The Value of a Spotter
Friend, it's obvious that the high speeds, blind curves, and constant mayhem on the track make NASCAR racing exciting for fans. Those same factors also make it very, very dangerous. But I suppose you could say the same things about life.

Today, everybody I know seems to be moving at high speed. Companies have to stay busy and productive to match the competition, and individual workers have to pick up the pace in order to keep their jobs.

Life certainly has its blind curves along the way too. Someone retires only to have the value of her investments plunge. Another gets a major promotion on Monday and has a debilitating heart attack the following Thursday. Or their joy goes out the window when a child is arrested for shoplifting or selling drugs.

Indeed, the mayhem on anyone's life course is simply the total collection of events beyond your control that threaten to wreck your plans and take you off the course. "I never saw it coming!" he says.

That's why NASCAR drivers have spotters positioned high above the track. It is a spotter's job to save his driver from disasters. He warns him of dangers ahead. He tells him to steer right or to back off. Insiders to the sport say the role of a spotter is one of the most important and most underrated jobs in racing.

Friend, wouldn't you like to have someone like that in your life? To warn you of dangers ahead? To steer you onto a safe course? To give you an added measure of protection during the hustle and hassle of living today?

Well, the truth is, you have one already! The all-seeing eye of God is not some sinister and threatening presence. And contrary to the negative idea some people have, God doesn't watch us to catch us and shout a cosmic "Gotcha!" He watches to guide and protect.

What each of us need to understand, is that heeding God's command against lying or adultery or stealing saves us from disaster. He knows those things always end in heartache - even when we can't see the danger. So, when Jesus calls us to steer the narrower and more difficult course of self-control and purity and faith, it is because he sees the end of things from the beginning. You see, God only forbids what will harm us if we do not steer clear; he only requires such things as will bless anyone who travels the high road.

My friend, your only safe lane in life's treacherous course is to pay attention to your spotter's voice. Tuning him out is as smart as driving 200-kmh with a blindfold on!

There is no doubting that temptation in our life's journey is very real. Especially in this hedonistic world in which we live today. The question is, how shall we deal with it? If you would really like to know, I'd be happy to send you a small booklet that provides some observations and guidelines for winning over temptation.
